OTERO RESIDENTS FORUM PERSON OF THE YEAR AWARD 2007

“It was easy choosing Otero Residents Forum’s Man of the Year Award. A no brainer,” noted one of the administrators of ORF. “The process is very straightforward because we are simple-minded and there are so many promising candidates. What we do is nominate men, women, flora and fauna, anything really, that has had a huge effect on Otero County. Their effect can be positive or negative. It just has to be HE-MUN-GOUS, you know, really big.

Before the moment you are all waiting for, we would like to recognize the recipients of the ORF Honorable Mentionable Awardables. They are: Sunbaked Cookies, Mayor Don Carroll, County Attorney Dan Bryant (highest paid county attorney in the known universe), the guy who took the picture of Marion Ledford in a hairnet, Mike and Johnny and Johnny, and those who own property that will benefit from the stoplights on the relief route, Henry Morgan Smith and last but not least, Gloria Vaughn, bless her heart.

And now a drum roll, please! The big kahuna, top dog award ORF Man of the Year Award goes to former Superintendent Cliff Spencer and former Cultural Resources Specialist Dianne White who together managed to spend gobs of your tax dollars to generate an application you didn’t want. This World Heritage Application almost flew under the radar but the Otero County Commissioners were alerted and a petition with over 1200 signatures told the Commissioners just what to do. Otero County now has an ordinance making a United Nations World Heritage Site a violation of our laws. Congratulations and thank you to Cliff and Dianne. Good luck in your new jobs.

  1. We had more than 50 visits to this blog since the publication of the POTY (Person of the Year) Award. Not one visitor felt compelled to criticize our selection. My conclusion is that (1) either most viewers agreed, or (2) Mr. Spencer’s and Dianne White’s supporters are shy or in fear of losing their jobs for using agency computers to view this blog.

  2. Traps Set To Chase Away Wolves…

The State Department of Fish and Game says three dogs have died in wolf attacks over the last month. Some of the attacks occurred while the owners were with their dogs.

“It’s not that wolves don’t ever eat dogs in the Anchorage area, they do almost every year. It’s just that this is a more concerning situation in the sense that wolves are coming right up when people are with their dogs,” Fish and Game wildlife biologist Jessy Coltrane said. “The wolves aren’t targeting the people, they’re targeting the dogs, but they’re still approaching with people in close proximity.”

This story came in too late to consider Jessy Coltrane for ORF Person of the Year. She would have made the short list because of her honesty, a quality all too lacking in bureaucrats.
